Belfort is located up high in the Sweetwater mountains at an elevation of 10,800 feet. Belfort is a gorgeous site! There are three cabins, foundations and mine ruins remaining as well as a killer view of both Nevada and California.
It was discovered by Lee Symmonds (first curator of the Mono County Museum) back in the late 1930s while out on a hunting trip. I can ONLY imagine what that felt like to come across a previously forgotten ghost town, FULL of untouched relics from the past! Its the kind of thing we dream about! There is a fantastic display in the Mono County museum of the relics that Lee found here at Belfort - we'd recommend a visit if you're in the area!
