Berlin Ichthyosaur State Park
Its more than a ghost town, its more than a fossil discovery site, its more than a state park, IT'S MORE THAN A HANGOUT FOR RATTLESNAKES!
Cat and I have been here a couple of times, the first time in 1998. There was lots to explore and it's similar to Bodie, in that the buildings have been somewhat restored. The mill is quite impressive, even has a new roof on it (the old one blew off last winter). There are some stamp batteries inside along with some other old mining equipment. There are quite a few buildings here and lots to explore if you've got the mind too (and we did). There isnt much left of the cemetary but we still got some great pics out there!
One great story about this place, Cat and I were scrounging around in the dirt looking for bottles. It was dusk and we had just given up and started walking back toward camp. Thats when we heard that unmistakable sound! A RATTLER! Cat froze, I barked my head off, and our friend Julie (wimp that she is) started running in total horror! Smacked Cat in the chest in her effort to get a good start too! What a crack up!
Cat snapped a picture of the snake, just to be able to show Julie and rib her about it! We think its a Western Diamond Back Rattler by its pattern and a pretty decent sized one as well!
