Burke, Idaho was once a thriving, bustling mining town. The canyon is very narrow, just over 300 feet wide at its center. So narrow that the Tiger hotel had a stream, a road and a railroad running through its center!
Today the buildings of the Hecla mine stand tall and promenent over the town. The ruins are impressive and totally worth the short drive up the canyon from Wallace to see.

A handfull of residents still call Burke and the canyon home. Despite the EPAs belief that this is one of the most contaminated sites in the area we found the canyon very beautiful. We'll be back to explore this very interesting area of Idaho and hope to gain permission to explore the Helca mine property the next time around.
